The Web page ranking methods originally introduced by Google has helped organize and rank the Web according to certain criteria. The raw criterion was based on the number of links pointing to a Web site. The more links a Web site had pointing to it the better rank it got and therefore better position in search results.

Ranking pages according to the number and quality of links is a factor in how some of the major search engines calculate and present search engine results. Few years back it was enough to get few hundred links pointing to a Web site over a short period of time and search engine traffic surged.

Web directories provide valuable services to the Web community. They offer access to highly targeted collections of Web sites and in many occurrences do better job in doing so than the large search engines do. Web directories can be counted in the tens of thousands or even more. It can be a long and taunting job to find Web directories and submit Web sites to them, but it can also be a dangerous job to do so.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a funny business. The nature of SEO is to exploit weaknesses in search engines to get better search engine results for their Web sites and the Web sites of their clients. In the past few years the SEO industry has grown into an industry generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. There are signs on the horizon that SEO as an industry could be facing some hurdles in the year 2006.

The idea is simple and perhaps brilliant. You set up a page with million pixels and sell advertising space on it. To have the ad visible you need to buy more than one pixel. The pixel ad concept became newsworthy earlier this year. The idea may be simple and the first pixel ad Web site was brilliant, but will the concept survive?

When searching for phrases like "buy Web traffic" or "buy visitors" search engine users are frequently prompted with advertisements from services offering a "lot of traffic" for "very little money". One service is at this moment offering 100,000 visitors for $35.00. Is it too good to be true?

Banner exchanges were followed by exit exchanges and pop-ups. The momentum for exit exchanges came when a certain company that sold digital cameras got enormous advertising using exit exchanges and buying cheap pop-up advertising.

Banner exchanges were first created in 1996. The first service became highly popular. The service was later bought by Microsoft for huge amounts. This service is now Microsoft Banner Advertising. After the first banner exchange service appeared many clones were created of which some were better than the original and offered members more advertising in exchange.
